Our story.

Connections. Empowering possibility.

MetroFibre’s journey began in 2010 with a bold vision: to transform the way businesses and communities connect. Led by a team of innovators, we started by rolling out fibre to business parks in Gauteng, laying the foundation for what would become a powerful open-access network.

Our core fibre ring in and around Centurion and Johannesburg now connects some of South Africa’s most prestigious financial institutions and tech companies. But our ambition didn’t stop there.

Bringing fibre to homes

In 2014, we expanded into residential areas, starting in Bryanston, Sunninghill, and Glen Austin. By 2015, the first home user was live on the MetroFibre network. The journey wasn’t easy—complex network designs, wayleave negotiations, and infrastructure challenges tested us at every step. But we persisted, driven by our purpose: Connections. Empowering Possibility.

We partnered with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to offer affordable, high-speed fibre with exceptional customer support, ensuring that individuals, small businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and enterprises could experience the power of seamless connectivity.

Expanding our reach

By 2019, we extended our footprint beyond Gauteng, bringing fibre to Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth—our first step into a new province. The momentum continued, and by 2020, MetroFibre had connected over 100,000 homes and businesses across five provinces.

The demand for home fibre surged in 2021, and we rose to the challenge. By 2024, we had passed over 500,000 residential homes and connected thousands of businesses, cementing our position as a leader in South Africa’s fibre industry.

Looking ahead

With the backing of STOA Infra & Energy, African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), the South African Housing & Infrastructure Fund (SAHIF), and other key shareholders, MetroFibre is positioned to challenge the status quo. Our vision is to be the undisputed challenger in the market—one that stands out by delivering exceptional service and innovative products for both homes and businesses.

We are shaping a future where connectivity unlocks potential. Our story is about resilience, innovation, and a relentless commitment to empowering South Africans through connections.
